Users getting the below error message while working in Office/Outlook. In our case, it was Outlook 2013 client.

Fix is to start/restart the SOFTWARE PROTECTION service on the servers/clients from where Office is run.

In my case, it was a XenDesktop Hosted Shared catalog and faulty servers exhibited the below.

All I have to do is to restart the Software Protection service on the servers. the executable is sppsvc.exe. I had to open task manager to kill the exe before i could restart the service.

  1. hi, sorry but can you explain it in very simple terms how to fix the problem. I don’t now what software protection is and where to find it and re-start it?

    • Hello, Software Protection runs as a windows service. You will need to get into Services.MSC console to see the running services. Open run command and type “services.msc” and hit enter. Once the console opens, look for the software protection service. If you are having this issue, it is most probably that the software protection service is not running or in stopping state. If not running, start the service or if in stopping state, restart the computer and then attempt to start the service.
